"More than two dozen works by world-renowned visual artist Alejandro Olmo depicting desert landscapes of the American Southwest will be on display during the Coachella Valley History Museum's Dia de los Muertos event. The paintings will remain on exhibit at the museum's Pioneer Hall through December.

Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, Olmo graduated from the University of Guadalajara with honors in several artistic disciplines. After studying under master potter Jorge Wilmot, Olmo worked in Europe and Japan before settling in the Coachella Valley in 2008.

“Alejandro Olmo’s paintings capture the beauty and mystery of the desert's natural scenery," museum President Karen Hawkesworth said. "We're very fortunate to be able to showcase a local artist of his caliber at the museum.""

"When Alejandro was 13 years old, he shared his career dreams with his dad.

“He said, ‘No, in my house, I want to have an architect, a doctor … you know, I don’t want to have an artist in my house because I know all the artists are crazy ... or something wrong with them.’”

He bucked his dad’s wishes and enrolled at the University of Guadalajara where he immersed himself in his studies at the college’s Escuela De Artes Plasticas (plastic arts school).

“When I left my house, my feeling was, to be an artist, you need to be more complete, not just painting - like music, like poetry, like writing – all that is art, it’s not just one phase,” he said.
